W-APT (WIDA ACCESS Proficiency Test)

​

  • Required by North Carolina for all students who speak another language besides English, when they first enroll in a public school

  • Measures English language proficiency

  • In grades 1 through 12, there are 4 subtests: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing

  • In Kindergarten, only 2 subtests: Listening and Speaking

  • English proficiency for each subtest is scored on a 6-level scale: 1 = Entering; 2 = Emerging; 3 = Developing; 4 = Expanding; 5 = Bridging; 6 = Reaching Proficiency

  • A score of 4 or lower on any subtest identifies a student as "Limited English Proficient" (LEP). Students who are LEP are sometimes allowed to have extra support when they take state tests.

ACCESS (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State) for ELLs

​

  • All North Carolina students whom the State has identified as "Limited English Proficient" (LEP), whether or not they participate in their school's ESL program, take this test each spring to measure their growth in English proficiency

  • 4 subtests: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing

  • English proficiency for each subtest is scored on a 6-level scale: 1 = Entering; 2 = Emerging; 3 = Developing; 4 = Expanding; 5 = Bridging; 6 = Formerly ELL

  • When a student scores 5 or 6 on all 4 subtests, he / she is no longer identified as LEP
